Chroma – 2007?
oil on panel 48 x 48″ ?
Another piece for throwback Thursday. This painting was very much a turning point as far as dance and my paintings. I have in my art career, pieces that are ‘markers’ for me and symbolise what I feel are high points in what I was doing at the time. This painting took three days to complete but actually was a culmination of what I had learned to that point. It was a bittersweet moment in a way because I could feel myself being drawn away from the dance work towards more classical subject matter and the concentration on painting that was more deliberate and technical. I started to seek knowledge all over for atelier style teaching and started to teach myself certain techniques in areas I thought I was lacking – something that was easier to do with the internet. I wanted to challenge myself and create work akin to what I found in The National Gallery and gave me a sense of wonder. I became hungry again; something that was drawn out of me with over ten years of dance painting. It was time for. change.?
This piece was based on the ballet by Wayne McGregor called Chroma and features as set designer my favorite architect John Pawson. The amazing Alina Cojocaru and Ed Watson are the dancers.?
